Outdoor family photo sessions are a great way to capture memories with those closest to you. When booking a family photoshoot with me we will talk about the vision you see when you think about your images. Is it a series of images telling a story? Or maybe you want something that's a little bit more posed.

POSED

I find that posed images are a great way to break the ice with my clients if they've never had a photoshoot done before or if they feel nervous about standing in front of a camera. Posed images don't have to be stiff and uncomfortable. By guiding my clients it lets them know what they need to do to start off with and eases them into the photoshoot.

When posing my clients for family photoshoots I always make sure that you look 'connected'. This means that there will always be a physical link between the parents and children. For example, if parent one and two are stood side by side with their arms around each others back and their child stood in between them, I would ask that each parent to bend down and wraps their other arm around the child. This is then a great cue to shout out prompts like 'tickle' and eases them into those more candid images without feeling like they need to force any laughter.

CANDIDS

Candid photographs are brilliant if you want something a bit more relaxed and informal. Clients often want candid images if they want to capture the raw emotion and authentic pictures that represent their family life.

Building a rapport with my clients is so important. When wanting to capture candids, having a rapport allows the family to feel comfortable and more themselves. This means that when looking for those beautifully relaxed candids the laughs and smiles will come shining through.

GAME TIME

Games are a great way to keep the children interested and focused during the photoshoot. It's also another way to capture candid imagery. As you can see through my example on the left, here we played hide and seek.

A few games that work well when taking photos:

Hide & Seek

What's the time Mr.Wolf?

Tag

Simon Says

Freeze Dance (will require music being played)

Why not bring some props?

Ball

Skipping Rope

Chalk (For Hopscotch)

THE DETAILS

This family in particular loved the outdoors, making Westonbirt Arboretum the perfect place for their photoshoot. Therefore, in this case it made sense that one of the more important detail shots were of their shoes as this reinforced their love for the walking.
